Mastering, it can be OK sometimes to have a big fat master that's big and square in your face with no dynamics or life everything pushed as loud as possible to the verge of distortion, well for me that's not the way I want the Master to sound,
it must breathe after mastering yes it must be loud and polished and smooth and groovy and fat but with dynamics a bit of light and shade some movement.
My typical mastering chain consists of:
SSL Chanel Strip with all the necessary arsenal
equalizer or 3 (EQ) to adjust frequencies,
compressor or more to control dynamics,
saturation to add warmth,
stereo enhancement tools for spread,
limiter to prevent clipping,
SSL bus compressor to glue it all together
