Basically STL is a 3d file format which are made with so may triangles. This file is only supported for 3d printing and it is not mechanical cad format friendly. The primarily scanned file is also in . stl/. obj format.
And Step file is made with clear surface and has very less faces to work with. It is also an universal file format supported by almost all of the CAD software.
